Three Passes Trek – 16-Day Itinerary
The Three Passes Trek is considered one of the most
challenging and rewarding routes in the Everest region of Nepal. This trek
crosses three high mountain passes over 5,300 meters: Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho
La (5,420 m), and Renjo La (5,360 m), while offering spectacular Himalayan
views. Below is a well-paced 16-day itinerary that includes acclimatization and
side trips for optimal safety.
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,350 m)
Arrive in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel, and prepare
gear. Evening briefing with your guide.
Day 2: Fly to Lukla (2,840 m) – Trek to Phakding (2,610
m)
A short, scenic flight to Lukla begins your adventure. You
then trek 3–4 hours alongside the Dudh Koshi River to Phakding.
Day 3: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m)
Cross suspension bridges and enter Sagarmatha National Park.
Steep climb into Namche, the Sherpa capital.
Day 4: Acclimatization at Namche
Hike to Everest View Hotel or Khumjung, and explore the
local markets and museums.
Day 5: Namche to Tengboche (3,860 m)
Walk through pine forests with views of Ama Dablam. In the
evening, visit Tengboche Monastery.
Day 6: Tengboche to Dingboche (4,410 m)
Gradual climb through a beautiful valley to reach Dingboche.
Day 7: Rest day in Dingboche - Acclimatization
Hike to Nangkartshang Peak for panoramic views at 5,083 m.
Day 8: Dingboche to Chhukung (4,730 m)
A shorter day, rising steadily toward the base of Island
Peak and Kongma La.
Day 9: Cross Kongma La Pass (5,535 m) – Trek to Lobuche
(4,910 m)
The first and toughest pass. Spectacular glacier and
Himalaya views.
Day 10: Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5,164 m) – Visit Everest
Base Camp (5,364 m)
From here, walk along the Khumbu Glacier to Gorak Shep, then
to Everest Base Camp.
Day 11: Climb Kala Patthar (5,545 m) – Trek to Dzongla
(4,830 m)
Morning climb to Kala Patthar for Everest’s best viewpoint,
then descend to Dzongla.
Day 12: Cross Cho La Pass (5,420 m) – Trek to Gokyo
(4,790 m)
A steep, icy crossing followed by a beautiful trek into the
Gokyo Valley.
Day 13: Rest Day in Gokyo – Climb Gokyo Ri (5,357 m)
Experience breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu,
and Cho Oyu.
Day 14: Cross Renjo La Pass (5,360 m) - Trek to Lumde
(4,368 m)
One of the most scenic passes; descend into a quiet valley
toward Lumde.
Day 15: Lumde to Namche Bazaar
Gradually descend through remote Sherpa villages.
Day 16: Namche to Lukla
Last day of trekking; celebrate your accomplishment.
