 The Upper Mustang trek Nepal is popularly known as Lo- Manthang trek. The trekkers have great opportunities to explore the hidden kingdom of Lo Manthang.The Upper Mustang Trek is a rare adventure into Nepal's most remote trans-Himalayan region, once the Kingdom of Lo. Renowned for its desert landscapes, ancient caves, Tibetan Buddhist culture, and medieval walled capital of Lo Manthang, this trek is both culturally enriching and visually stunning. The following is an elaborate 12–14 day itinerary that is usually taken by trekkers.

Day 1: Pokhara to Jomsom (2,720 m), Trek to Kagbeni (2,810 m)

Take an early morning flight to Jomsom, a windy desert town in the Kali Gandaki Valley. Begin trekking along a sandy trail to Kagbeni, the gateway to Upper Mustang. In the afternoon, explore its narrow alleys, monasteries, and fortress-like architecture.

Day 2: Kagbeni to Chele (3,050 m)

Pass the restricted-area checkpoint and follow the trail north along the valley. Pass through the whitewashed houses and buckwheat fields of Tangbe village before arriving at Chele, where the landscape starts to get more arid and dramatic.

Day 3: Chele to Syangboche (3,800 m)

Climb steeply over Taklam La and Dajori La passes. Enjoy impressive views of Tilicho Peak and Nilgiri. Descend to Samar and continue through desert canyons to Syangboche.

Day 4: Syangboche to Ghami (3,520 m)

The day comprises several ups and downs over high passes like Yamada La; traditional villages and ancient mani walls can be visited. Arrive in Ghami, well-known for its long mani wall and red cliffs.

Day 5: Ghami to Tsarang (3,620 m)

Walk through fields and then cross a suspension bridge before climbing towards Tsarang. This historic town has an old palace, large monastery, and great views of the expansive valley.

Day 6: Tsarang to Lo Manthang (3,840 m)

The trail follows a wide valley floor to Lo La Pass and the first views of walled city Lo Manthang, former capital of Mustang and definitely one of the trek's key attractions.

Day 7: Explore Lo Manthang

Take a whole day to visit ancient monasteries like Thubchen and Jampa, the royal palace, and the traditional settlement. Optional trips include Chhoser caves and local villages around.

Day 8: Lo Manthang to Dhakmar (3,820 m)

Start the return journey via a different route. Hike through deserted canyons and colorful cliffs to Dhakmar, which has striking red rock formations.

Day 9: Dhakmar to Ghiling (3,570 m)

A wonderful trek past high passes and village settlements. Sometimes the area around is subjected to fierce afternoon winds, so early starts are advantageous.

 

Day 10: Ghiling to Chhusang (2,980 m)

Continue to descend with views of Nilgiri and Annapurna ranges. Pass by Samar, and then descend further to Chhusang.

Day 11: Chhusang to Jomsom (2,720 m)

From here, the trail is retraced back to Kagbeni and follows the Kali Gandaki River downstream to Jomsom where you stay overnight.

Day 12: Fly Jomsom to Pokhara

Fly back to Pokhara in the morning and end the trek.

This Upper Mustang itinerary mixes adventure, culture, and breathtakingly beautiful desert-mountain scenery. With ancient monasteries, unique landscapes, and the fascinating city of Lo Manthang, it remains one of Nepal's most extraordinary trekking experiences.
