Sal is a very important timber tree, both for home use and
for export. A white resin sal dammar can be tapped from the trunk and this is
used for caulking boats and as incense.

shedding most of its leaves in winter. It has a characteristic dark brown,
rough and deeply fissured bark. Thi fruit is also conspicuous. Each one having
5 wings, and they hang down in brown clusters.
Sal leaf plates are used for offerings at temple and
religious festivals
