Manang village smoke-free for decades
Thinking of visiting Phu VDC in Manang? Remember to leave your cigarettes behind.
The VDC has declared itself a smoke-free zone and instituted an undecided fine for smoking and up to Rs 100,000 for shops selling cigarettes.
However, no one has been punished as all, including those visiting the VDC, have obeyed the rule. Visitors are informed of the rule upon entering and so far there have been no violations till now.
According to local resident Tasi Lama, it was around 1971 when a Tibetan lama came to the village and banned smoking to improve health of local residents suffering from tuberculosis and asthma. The informal rule has continued since then.
"One can not be addicted to smoking since birth. Smoking is a habit that will be discouraged only if one does not smoke," said Lama.
"I quit smoking after visiting Phu," said Birkha Singh Tamang, member of the Union of Trekking Travels Rafting and Airlines Workers Nepal.
VDC secretary Kul Bahadur Basnet said smoking was banned mainly due to health reasons. "All local people know how bad smoking is. So they are healthier," he said.

The Mount Everest T rekking
The Mount Everest trekking route is justifiably the most famous of all trekking and mountain regions. The Everest region offers a wide range of trekking experiences. From the Everest Base Camp trek (listed as one of the ten best trips in the world) to treks in remote semi-wilderness areas, there is much to choose from. Khumbu is also the home of the legendary Sherpas. To the east of the Sagarmatha National Park is the Makalu-Barun National Park, a remote and wild stretch of mountain peaks and deep, densely forested valleys. To the west is the Rolwaling valley, a well protected microcosm of cultures. Mount Everest naturally is the major attraction here, but there are other 8,000 meter peaks in the region such as Lhotse, Cho Oyu and Makalu besides the many lesser peaks which are no less stunning. There’s more to Khumbu than just mountains. The stark beauty in the form of glacial lakes, resplendent rhododendron forests, native flora and fauna, charming villages and ancient Buddhist monasteries all add up to make this region an irresistible tourist destination
